Skylights and atrium glazing take the sun at its most direct angle, which makes them the hottest square footage in most buildings. Below them you get a hot spot, blown-out glare, and floors, art, and merchandise fading in a stripe that tracks across the room with the sun.
Santa Monica has an unusual concentration of them — converted warehouses in the industrial pockets, top-floor creative offices, and the courtyard atria in the retail centres all rely on overhead glass for daylight. Film handles the heat and glare, blocks the UV that causes the fading, and where the glazing is overhead we can add a safety laminate so a broken pane stays contained rather than coming down. Access is our problem: we bring the lifts and staging.
